How To Choose A Staircase Chandelier
Diyas Inina French Gold 9 Light Tall Crystal Chandelier
Searching for the perfect chandelier to hang over a staircase can seem a bit daunting at first, especially with there being so many options to choose from. This guide should provide useful information including sizes, styles and guides to help you find the perfect chandelier for you and your property.
At WT Lighting we offer a huge selection of chandeliers in a range of styles, sizes and colour finishes. Chandeliers are now known as the grand light fittings you often see in large properties, often dressed with crystal or glass droplets however in the past, chandeliers were known as large light fixtures with multiple arms.
Most people assume that only properties with huge ceiling heights or big entrance hallways can take a staircase chandelier however this is definitely not the case. If you haven't got a grand staircase, you can still add a chandelier above your stairwell as most of our chandeliers also come in smaller versions which includes flush and semi-flush versions which are more suitable for properties with smaller ceiling heights or smaller staircases. If however you do have a grand staircase or gallery landing, a grand chandelier would be better suited. However big or small your staircase, you can still add a statement chandelier to create the wow factor.
Lets answer some of the most frequently asked questions about staircase chandeliers...
How big should a light be in a stairwell?
There is no specific rule when it comes to chandelier sizing as everybody has their own opinion however as a general rule of thumb, we would recommend that the diameter of the light at the widest point is around half the total width of the opening that the chandelier will hang. In regards to height, we would recommend that the space between the floor and the chandelier is no less than 2.1 meters (7 foot).
Can you adjust the height of a staircase chandelier?
Yes, the majority of our chandeliers hang on a chain or suspension wire which can be adjusted on installation to suit your room size. Most lights come with an excessive amount of chain/cable to allow for most ceiling heights. If you require a custom height, please contact our sales team who can assist you with this.
How to access a staircase chandelier to maintain and change light bulbs.
Once your stairwell chandelier has been installed, you may wonder how you can clean/maintain it and change light bulbs if required. If you are installing a chandelier in an inaccessible position, it may be worth considering having a winch installed so you can lower the chandelier when required via a remote or switch. If you would like further details on winch systems, please don't hesitate to contact our sales team who will be happy to help.
Can I hang a chandelier on a pitched ceiling?
If you have a pitched ceiling, you need to ensure that the light fitting you choose can either fit on the flat central section or be installed direclty on a pitched ceiling. Most lights that hang from a single chain/cable can be hung directly on a slanted ceiling as the weight of the light itself will automatically level out the light fitting. If you have a small flat section in the centre of the ceiling but are wanting to install a light with a large ceiling plate, we offer an adaption kit that may be the answer for you. What types of staircase chandeliers are available?
The main types of staircase chandeliers that we offer are:
- Crystal Chandeliers - multiple tiers of crystal droplets that combine with metalwork to create a large chandelier. Each tier often has a different diameter or creates a cascading effect.
- Cluster Pendants - several suspensions with glass or metal shades that suspend from a round ceiling plate. Each suspension can be positioned to create a spiral effect or clustered together.
- Traditional Chandeliers - hanging light fixtures that are made up with multiple arms, often with decorative detailed metalwork made from solid brass.
