What is a PIR Sensor?
A pir sensor is a sensor that detects motion or movement in surrounding areas. Some lighting products such as exterior wall lights have pir sensors built onto them and are used for several purposes. The main purposes are:
- Security - a lot of people use pir motion sensored lights to install around their properties for security reasons. If an intruder was to enter part of your property and was detected by the pir motion sensor, the light would immediately illuminate and may scare the intruder off or raise the alarm to alert you that movement has been detected on your property.
- Practicality - A lot of people opt to install a pir motion sensored wall light beside their front or back door for convenience when approaching. For example, if you have your hands full or are searching for your door keys, the light would automatically illuminate when it detects your motion making it easier to see what you are doing. It is also welcoming and convenient for visitors.
Can you adjust PIR motion sensors?
Yes, pir motion sensors often have multiple adjustments so you can set them to your required needs. The main adjustments usually include:
- Daylight sensitivity - you can adjust how light or dark it needs to be for the motion sensor to begin working.
- Range - you can adjust the range of how far the sensor will detect movement from. Some people may wish to have a small area of detection if they live near a road and some people may require a wider range if they live in more remote areas. Pir sensors can often detect up to 8 meters.
- Time - you can adjust how long the light will stay on for once motion has been detected. This can range from 30 seconds up to over 10 minutes.
